A neat fact I like to drop in casual games of "Two Truths and a Lie" is that both my parents are published authors. In 2017–2018, both my parents had books come out and, because they're so proud of my work as a graphic designer, they both let me do the cover designs!
Hospital Land by Wendy Simonds analyzes the wide-reaching powers of medicalization: the dynamic processes by which medical authorities, institutions, and ideologies impact our everyday experiences, culture, and social life. I shot the cover photo behind The Tabernacle in Atlanta and added in a neon pharmacy sign to suggest a medical environment. The spokes on the ferris wheel are also hypodermic needles, a detail which is not immediately obvious to most, but allows for an "Aha!" moment down the line.
The Importance of Elsewhere by Randy Malamud is a collection of essays, rooted in his own lifetime of travel, that addresses questions like,Why do we travel? What are we doing—and what do we imagine we are doing—when we leave the house, get on a plane, and thereby step into globalism? My father always told me—and anyone else who would listen—that the best part of any trip is coming home, and one of his favorite features of our home base (Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport) is the classic FLY DELTA JETS sign that you'll see if you're lucky enough to take off from runway 08R/26L. The cover features a likeness of this sign with a background I composited from several stock photos—for some reason the good people at Hartsfield-Jackson are disinclined to let you wander the runways with a camera unsupervised.
